About the Prints
In 2022 I created an ephemeral 30’ textile mural titled “Cosmic Thread” on the entry wall at the Center For Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland, Maine as part of my first solo museum exhibition Mind Loops. Over the course of 5 days I improvised the piece on-site using an assortment of materials, including multicolored elastic belts, textile trimmings, and 35mm slide carousels. I’ve been making this style of temporary installation since 2009, when I first encountered a treasure trove of textile materials in the basement of the Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn, NY. The belts and trimmings were among the many materials produced in the building during its past life as a factory space. Throughout the years, I‘ve been reusing these same materials to create my pieces, recombining and reinventing them to form novel compositions.
I have partnered with Portland-based fine art printer Alex Carlisle to capture the monumental textile piece in a unique print format. The result is a 32-color screen print, based on a photograph of “Cosmic Thread” taken by David Clough as the source image. A screen print with over 30 colors is a monumental undertaking. And rather than make a single print edition, we decided to create two parallel editions. “Cosmic Thread,” the primary edition, has a color palette that matches the materials used in the original textile installation. For the second edition, “Cosmic Glow,” we substituted colors to make a brighter, higher-contrast composition.
This project was funded by private donors, and in part by a Springboard grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
